Growth Factor Serum After a Non-Invasive Procedure
Your treatment is finished—but your skincare routine may need a temporary reset.
If you already use a growth factor serum, you may wonder whether you should apply it after your appointment. The answer starts with your provider’s aftercare instructions, rather than the product’s anti-aging claims.
A serum that suits your everyday routine may not be appropriate for freshly treated skin.
“Non-Invasive” Does Not Mean Every Product Is Suitable
Non-invasive treatments generally leave the skin’s surface intact, but they can still cause temporary sensitivity.
It is also important to distinguish non-invasive from minimally invasive procedures. Microneedling and RF microneedling puncture the skin, while ablative laser resurfacing affects its protective surface. These treatments require their own aftercare plans.
Instead of asking only, “Can I use this after a non-invasive procedure?” ask:
“Is this exact serum appropriate after the treatment I received—and when should I restart it?”
Where Does Growth Factor Serum Fit?
Growth factor serums are marketed to address visible concerns such as fine lines, uneven texture, and a less firm appearance. Their ingredients and supporting evidence vary between products.
However, evidence about everyday cosmetic use does not automatically establish that a serum speeds recovery or is suitable immediately after a procedure.
Think of your serum as a possible step in your ongoing skincare routine. Its place during recovery needs a separate assessment.
When Can You Restart Your Serum?
There is no single waiting period that applies to every treatment and every serum.
Your provider should consider:
-
The procedure and treatment intensity.
-
Whether the skin’s protective surface was affected.
-
Any redness, peeling, tenderness, or irritation.
-
The serum’s complete ingredient list.
-
Your individual skin history.
Bring your product—or a clear photograph of its ingredient label—to your appointment. Ask for specific instructions before restarting it.
Keep Early Aftercare Simple
During recovery, use the products your provider recommends. Depending on your treatment, these may include a gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturizer, and sun protection when appropriate.
Avoid adding multiple new products at once. Your skin’s needs immediately after treatment may differ from its usual routine.
Follow your provider’s instructions about when to resume retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, and other active products.
A Note About Microneedling
Applying a cosmetic serum to intact skin is different from introducing it through freshly created channels.
Do not use a home microneedling device to push growth factor serum into your skin. The FDA states that microneedling devices are not approved to deliver cosmetics or topical medications into the skin.
Three Questions to Ask Before You Leave
-
Can I use my growth factor serum after this specific treatment?
-
When should I restart it, and how often should I apply it?
-
What reaction should prompt me to stop using it and contact you?
Clear instructions make your routine easier to follow and help prevent unnecessary guesswork.
